LED – is not only lighting elements smaller than usual ones, stronger and economical of disappearing resources. Today LED starts to be new instrument, new tool of designers and modern artists impression. Combination with other new technologies, new philosophy of interactive LED can change our view of lighting system and design at all.
«Light liberation» exhibition which will act in DesignAct days in Gorky Park will demonstrate it. And this subject of history and perspectives of new technologies will be discussed on DA Forum. Rombut Friling, the director of OpenLight (joint experimental laboratory of Technical University Eindhoven) will take part in it and Philips company with colleagues-designers Eric Toring, Teo Jasper Pitters and Packvin Man, Dannish designers Hanna-Luisa Yohannesen and Mickle Gulielmi. They all unite modern technologies and textile in their work.
Rombout Frieling, Open Light, Creative director (www.tue.nl), Ikawa, head of designers (www.ikawacoffee.com), innovationRCA, grant holder and investigator James Dison (www.innovation.rca.ac.uk)
Rombut's academic road was not so easy: philosophy at the Tilburga university, industrial design at the Technic university of Eindovena, interaction between computer and the person in Stanford University and industrial design one more time at Kings Art College in investigating center of Kings college of Art and Imperial college in London.
Since 2008 James Dison is a grant holder in investigating center of Kings Art school. He starts to study modern lighting technologies that year too in the University of Eindhoven. Since 2010 h leads the project - OPENLIGHT.
Here his group don't depend on concrete technological or design tasks. Every new opportunity can be the subject of discussion and the reason for new experiments. The slogan of the Project is – “Investigating all opportunities of Light”.
Rombut took part in different light events with his OpenLight project such as Light Through Culture in Sienna or in Festival in Genta.
Eric Toering, designer (www.erictoering.nl)
He has finished Technical university in Eindhoven with the project for Polymer Vision company, which develops and promotes flexible displays – independent decision for this work ( device to control by flexing it). These displays became a part of new company’s patent. The main interest of the designer – relations between a person and modern technology: a lo of new opportunities now are taken as normal already, but “we lived for 10 years in a new millennium, but my fridge still don’t order milk and eggs itself”. That's the conflict between our expectations and something that really brings progress.
Eric thinks that designers should concentrate on flexible systems of relations between people, technologies and huge amount of information.
Eric made a project DanceRail with other designers Frank de Yong and Packvin Man.
He will represent it soon in Moscow. Such a relation gives new opportunities: the light provokes the movement, it makes new changings of light installation.
Theo Jasper Pieterse, designer (www.jasperpieterse.nl)
Pakwing Man, designer (www.pakwing.nl/portfolio)
They are the graduating students of Technical University in Eindhoven. They are impressed by modern technologies, interactive design and new ways of interaction with consumer. They've done several objects together, devoted to light, movement and comprehension – they remind of kinetic sculptures and they've taken parts in different exhibitions.
